Sustainability
H&J Martin Group is committed to protecting the environment, conserving resources, and addressing climate change. We actively assess the impact of our operations and work with clients, suppliers, and employees to reduce adverse effects and promote sustainable practices for future generations.
About Environmental Sustainability
At H&J Martin Group, sustainability is embedded in how we plan, operate, and deliver. Our ISO 14001-accredited Environmental Management System ensures that environmental risks are identified, assessed, and managed across all projects.
Through tailored Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs), we reduce environmental impact, support resource efficiency, and promote long-term outcomes for nature and communities.
Working toward a sustainable future
Our strategy sets out a clear vision for delivering positive environmental outcomes. It focuses on key areas such as resource efficiency, carbon reduction, and sustainable operations. We’re committed to ambitious targets and transparent reporting, building on the progress we’ve made to date and driving continuous improvement across all aspects of our environmental performance.
How we’re compliant
Our Key Focus Areas
Climate Action
We are committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050. Our Carbon Reduction Strategy is built on robust data collection aligned with SECR requirements, covering Scope 1, 2, and relevant Scope 3 emissions. All operational staff undergo environmental training, and our supply chain partners report monthly on fuel consumption to support our decarbonisation goals.
Resource efficiency
We promote a circular economy approach by minimising waste and maximising material efficiency throughout the project lifecycle. From pre-construction to completion, we work closely with design and client teams to reduce environmental impact through responsible sourcing and lean construction practices.
Environmental Management and Improvement
Environmental management is embedded in our operations through our ISO 50001-accredited Energy Management System. Each site has a dedicated Energy Champion, a tailored Energy Plan, and an Eco-map to optimise energy use and reduce emissions through smarter material movement and asset operation.
Nature Positive
We actively support biodiversity through site-specific initiatives and sustainable design choices. Eco-cabins are standard on our projects, reducing energy use by up to 12%. We also align with industry best practices, including the Considerate Constructors Scheme, to ensure ecological awareness across all teams.
Green Action Network
Sustainability is a shared responsibility. Our Green Travel Plans, Green Driver Training, and electric vehicle schemes empower staff and subcontractors to reduce transport emissions. We maintain a fleet of electric vans and collaborate with our supply chain to improve sustainability governance across all contracts.
Our Environmental Targets
Reduction target per £100k Energy-related CO₂ intensity
Usage target per £100k Mains water consumption
Recycling target All site-generated waste recycled
Disposal target per £100k Waste to landfill
Reduction trajectory CO₂ from diesel, electric & transport usage
Compliance target, Zero incidents & complaints
Net Zero by 2050
Our ambition to reach Net Zero is shaping smarter, faster, and greener project delivery. We empower our operational teams with the tools, training, and support they need to take bold, practical steps toward sustainability, benefiting both our clients and the environment.
