Elmwood Protection Services recently completed a bespoke automation project for an existing sliding gate at a secure site. This project involved the manufacture and installation of a custom drive system, significantly enhancing the gate’s performance and safety.
The challenge
The client required the automation of an existing sliding gate to improve operational efficiency while adhering to strict safety regulations. The primary challenge was to ensure that the gate’s closing speed did not exceed the allowed 500mm per second, while also enhancing the overall safety of the gate.

Upon receiving the client’s request, Elmwood Protection Services promptly provided a detailed quote, which was accepted, and the works were approved. Our team designed and manufactured a bespoke drive system, incorporating inverter-controlled switchgear and a motor-gearbox drive transmitted through a rack and pinion assembly, all housed in a fabricated steel cabinet.
Execution
The project involved:
- Assessment: Conducting a thorough assessment of the existing sliding gate and identifying the key areas for improvement.
- Planning: Developing a comprehensive plan to automate the gate, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and minimal disruption to the site’s operations.
- Manufacture: Designing and manufacturing a bespoke drive system, including inverter-controlled switchgear, a motor-gearbox drive, and a rack and pinion assembly.
- Installation: Installing the bespoke drive system and integrating it with the existing gate. Our skilled technicians ensured that the system was installed correctly and tested for optimal performance.
- Safety enhancements: Enhancing the gate’s safety with the installation of two BEA Laser sensors to provide full coverage of the gate closing area and 2.5m high runback fencing in 358 high-security anti-climb mesh.
- Completion: The entire automation was completed within the agreed timeline, providing the client with a highly efficient and safe sliding gate system.
Outcome
The newly automated sliding gate system now provides the client with significantly improved operational efficiency, nearly halving the time taken to close the gate while ensuring compliance with the 500mm per second speed regulation. The enhanced safety features, including BEA Laser sensors and high-security anti-climb mesh fencing, ensure a secure environment for the site.
